Indicators are used to detect and determine the respective type of bacteria or other microorganisms. The available germination indicators are easy to use. They have plastic nutrient media carriers with an agar coating and deliver reliable results within 24 to 72 hours of exposure. Depending on the version, they are suitable for examining solid media such as surfaces, semi-solid materials or liquids and, thanks to the sterilization, can be used directly.

The agar is originally used to thicken soups or ice cream. In Asian cuisine in particular, the substance extracted from the cell walls of special algae is often used as a vegan food additive. In the medical field, the agar is used as a selective medium and to solidify the nutrient media when cultivating germs.
The temperature-resistant gel-like substance liquefies at 95 degrees Celsius and solidifies at 45 degrees Celsius. Since a thin layer of liquid forms on the surface, the solidifying agar can easily be smoothed out with a spatula. In addition to growing on a nutrient medium, agar gel is also used in laboratories for growing plants.
