General information about otoscopes
An otoscope is a tool used by the ear, nose and throat specialist and the hearing aid acoustician. It is used to examine the external auditory canal and the eardrum. The examination with an otoscope is a fast and efficient examination method. The components of today's otoscope were invented back in 1860 and have been used by doctors for examinations ever since.
Modern otoscopes
A modern otoscope combines an ear mirror an ear funnel and a practical handle, which usually contains a battery or accumulator to power an often built-in light source. The light source is needed to illuminate the ear canal, which facilitates the examination. For the sake of hygiene, the ear funnel is usually a disposable product that is replaced after each examination.
Video otoscopes
NIn addition to standard otoscopes there are also video otoscopes. In addition to illumination these have a high-quality camera to transfer images to a screen or computer. These images can then also be enlarged which allows a more detailed view and examination of the eardrum and the auditory canal. In conclusion it can be said that otoscopes are still a very important and fast examination method today.
